John Lee Johnson pushed back the right bat wing of the windblown Mexican Cantina. There he saw the lithe and deadly Irvin Pendly sitting in a dark corner drinking pulche. Pendly pushed aside his drink. John Lee Johnson walked slowly to him. John kicked under the table where the gunfighter sat... the war was on.

The Mexican cantina sat at a dusty crossroads. The warp and woof of wind sent dust clouds spiraling erratically this way and that. John Lee Johnson, caught in this sand storm, could see the cantina up ahead. He could make out the pinto horse with his head down, avoiding the abrasive wind. He rode up to the hitch hearing a Mexican accented voice warning someone of his arrival. He dismounted making a faint spur jingle in the ankle deep sand. He stepped up on the gritty rough hewn porch. He eased the right batwing forward.
Inside the darkened establishment sat Irvin Pendly. Irvin's hat brim shadowed most of his face but his green eyes seemed to have taken on a glow. A serpentine smile creeped across his thin face. He did not have to go hunting for John Lee Johnson. He just entered the door. Irvin sipped his cloudy pulche from a crude cup and his voice slithered across the room. "I'll get to you shortly, big man, I'm still drinkin'"

God doesn’t make many perfect men, but John Lee Johnson comes close. He’s willing to kill those who do wrong but show mercy, as well. Not preternatural but extraordinary, John has made enemies who will go great lengths to destroy him. As a former confederate soldier, he is beleaguered constantly by once union general Frank McGrew.
McGrew holds John in disdain and now concentrates his hate toward the big Texan who wants nothing more than to live peacefully on his ranch with his beloved wife, Martha. McGrew hatches a plan that forces John to face notorious pit fighter El Toro in Chihuahua, Mexico, and John takes the bait. On the way, he meets an older man named Lambert, but Lambert has secrets of his own.
Meanwhile, John’s rich, bachelor cousin Seth has women throwing themselves at his feet. His friend Floyd concocts a scheme to find the perfect woman for Seth while John prepares to fight a death battle in a hot pit of the Chihuahua Desert. John survived the Civil War; now, he must survive El Toro, McGrew, and those who plot to steal the peace he’s worked so hard to find.
About the Author
Conn Hamlett earned a bachelor of arts degree from Lipscomb University and his master’s degree from Vanderbilt’s Peabody College. His diverse career has included roles as a Latin teacher, professional wrestler, competitive bodybuilder, radio personality, and radio sports host. When Conn is not traveling the world, he lives in Joelton, Tennessee.
